At DATA, anything is possible

DATA students listen to Michael Hurst and James Borrego

It’s okay to dream big in Mario Falcon’s Audio Video Production class.

In fact, drive, passion and big dreams give you an edge at the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) at Roosevelt High School. Years of working in front of and behind the camera on film sets, commercials and music videos taught Falcon the art of filmmaking.

Recently, his students learned what it takes to make their dreams come true during a visit with James Borrego and Michael Druck.

Borrego is a film producer who currently coordinates the Radio, Television and Film Program at San Antonio College (SAC). He’s also a San Antonio native, and the brother of actor Jesse Borrego. He knows what it’s like to work hard for a dream that feels like an uphill climb.

“I’ve always dreamed of having a film industry here in San Antonio,” said Borrego. “The accessibility of being able to produce films is at your fingertips, but you need the creators, the talent and a trained workforce. So, seek out inspiration and start looking for your path – whether that’s cinematography, lighting or acting.”

Students received a masterclass in navigating all aspects of the film industry. Druck, a Roosevelt graduate himself, shared his journey as a student finding his confidence in Roosevelt Theatre class to working as a casting director in major markets across the country.

Borrego and Druck shared their experience and wisdom with the next generation of filmmakers. Most of all, Falcon wanted to show his students that their dreams are within their reach, no matter how big they are.

“I want my students to know that whatever they want to do in life – it’s obtainable,” said Falcon. “You can do it. You can reach your dreams and we are a living example that anything is possible.”

Our DATA magnet school program emphasizes career and professional readiness in the fields of Animation, Audio/Video Production, Graphic Design & Digital Arts, and Video Game Design. Check out all of our options at DATA.
