“It’s just like being a second mom to them.”

“I love it in here because it’s just like being a second mom to them. They walk in and they’re worried and you try to put them at ease and let them know it’s going to be okay.”

No one knows Bulverde Creek Elementary School quite like Valerie Comalander. She’s been the Clinic Assistant since it opened in 2005. There’s a lot she loves about the job, but her favorite thing is bonding with the kids. That often blossoms into meaningful relationships with their families.

Her secret? Leading with kindness and compassion.

“It makes me happy if I can make the kids feel good and safe in the clinic so they go back to class smiling and happy. That’s what I love about this job – being around the kids is just great.”

Valerie’s impact can’t be measured. But it was easy for Bulverde Creek nurse Laura Nasser to spot.

“I was blown away at Meet the Teacher night because high school kids stopped by the clinic just to see her,” said Nasser. “And another family stopped in just to give her a hug. Having someone so knowledgeable who knew all of the families makes my job so much easier.”

Valerie worked at Thousand Oaks Elementary School before moving to Bulverde Creek. She’s also a North East ISD parent who considers herself lucky to have been able to watch her kids grow up in our District.

“I’ve seen NEISD at work. Our kids grow up and they’re successful and then they come back and now they’re making a difference. I don’t know why anyone would want to go anywhere else.”

Thank you, Valerie, for investing in our students and families #theNEISDway.
