Mr. Scott K. Harris

I have lived in San Antonio since 1977.  I went to Judson High School, was an Eagle Scout, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History/Psychology from Texas State University in 1990. There, I played Water polo for the university, as well as competed on the Cycling team, helping the team win back-to-back South Central Conference (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas) Championships. I was San Antonio City Champion (Category 4) in 1988.

I coached swimming and water polo at Judson high school for 11 years, and coached swimming for the next six years at Reagan high school.  We were 7x District Champions and 3x Regional Champions in Swimming, and 2x Regional Champions in Water Polo. I was 7x District Coach of the Year, and once Regional Coach of the Year.  We created 46 All-State athletes, 61 Swimming/Diving All-Americans, 6 Water Polo All-Americans, 23 Academic All-Americans, 4 Swimming Individual State Champions, and 192 lettermen. Five swimmers earned Olympic Trials cuts, with one making two Olympic teams. I retired from coaching in 2008 to spend more time with my family and pursue my M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership, which I earned in 2009 from Lamar University.

I have taught U.S. History, World History (regular & pre-A.P.), Psychology (regular & A.P.), A.P. Macroeconomics, Philosophy, and I.B.'s Theory of Knowledge. Currently, I teach A.P. Macroeconomics, A.P. Psychology, and Philosophy, and the third year of a new course, "Ethics, Economy, & Entrepreneurship." Similar to many universities' PPE programs (Philosophy, Politics, Economics), it is an interdisciplinary course which allows for the study of human action and economics in the richer context of ethics and entrepreneurship.

I have been nominated five times for the Trinity Distinguished Educator Award, twice for Teacher of the Year, and once for the Disney American Teacher Award.  I received the Mirabeau B. Lamar Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Quality School Teacher Award, awarded by psychiatrist-turned-educational reformer William Glasser, M.D., becoming the first in Texas and the third in the Nation to receive the award.

I have guest-lectured at Texas State in Philosophy, and at the University of Texas San Antonio in Graduate Education. I piloted the curriculum for John Stossel in the Classroom, the video series of then-ABC's 20/20 co-host at Reagan.  I am Associate Producer for izzit.org and a consultant to the Free to Choose Network, both of which produce videos advocating economic education and personal liberty. I have done additional work with the Hoover Institution, the Bill of Rights Institute, and the American Institute for Economic Research. My editorials have appeared in The San Antonio Express-News, The Foundation for Economic Education, Intellectual Take Out, WallStreetWindow, and Real Clear Markets. I have done numerous podcast appearances on The Reason Rx and Classroom Success 101.

In the spring of 2021, I came out of coaching retirement, coaching water polo with the Alamo Area Water Polo club, now over 200 members. This is my 33rd year of teaching, and 22nd at Reagan. My wife and I have been married 27 years this spring, and we have two sons, aged 21 and 17.
