Technical Theater
Discover the artistry of behind-the-scenes production, where imagination and precision unite to create unforgettable performances. Students of all experience levels are able to build confidence as they rotate through roles in NESA productions, helping them discover unique technical perspectives. This provides one-of-a-kind preparation for future education and careers in performing arts and beyond.
Students can express artistic talents behind the scenes by enrolling in our 4-year technical theater major. Students explore the principles of design and composition while teaching students to create working drawings, renderings, and models. By utilizing futuristic equipment under the guidance of industry professionals, students learn through our immersive curriculum that covers costume designer, stage manager, sound board operator, light board operator, set designer, and spotlight operator. The major is targeted towards aspiring technicians who wish to study and produce a variety of different skills, like artistic design programs, management/leadership opportunities, and construction abilities.

Coursework for Technical Theater
Freshman Courses
Intro to Technical Theater: Students are introduced to the theatrical topics of safety, technical terminology, theater history, modern theater forms, the use of hand and power tools, basic set construction techniques, and theatrical production. Practical projects are utilized for students to apply their knowledge.
Technical Theater Lab: Students learn the basic techniques and procedures of set construction, focusing on common tools and equipment used to scene shops and stages.
Sophomore & Junior Courses
Stagecraft I & II: This stacked class provides students with an in-depth study of technical theater. Topics include set construction, scenic painting, production skills, introduction to theater management, and practical assignments related to productions. Students are taught advanced construction of stage scenery and painting while also exploring stage lighting, sound operations, and management, focusing on safety, instrument maintenance, and running productions.
Electives: Students experience four semester-long intensive classes that focus on specialized training and lessons on the topics of Stage Management, Stage Makeup, Props, and TV/Film Media Production. In each of these classes, students gain extensive training, allowing them to have hands-on experience in advanced settings.
Senior Courses
Advanced Stagecraft III: Students continue their exploration of advanced technical theater and production skills through the study of design, properties management, stage management, and costuming for productions. Students work on individual projects based on the production schedule, giving them opportunities for advanced lighting, sound console operations, stage management, and the application of technical theater concepts.
Theater Production IV: Designed to be a mentorship program, this class is paired with the Technical Theater Lab class for freshmen. During this class, seniors will lead, assist, and teach freshmen, giving the seniors exposure to all areas of technical theater and experience in leading and mentoring younger students.
