Student turned employee gives service with a smile

RJ smiles while working in the Longs Creek kitchen

RJ Villarreal is serving up a whole lot more than fresh fruit and vegetables in the Longs Creek Elementary School cafeteria.

His bright smile and cheerful demeanor are so magnetic he makes everyone around him feel special.

RJ is a former North East Transition Services (NETS) student. This community-based program serves NEISD students between the ages of 18 – 21 with disabilities who have completed high school and are seeking the support skills necessary for adult life.

Earlier this year, RJ earned his Food Handler’s Certificate while working alongside the North East ISD School Nutrition Services department. This certificate allows him to work in a variety of food service industries. He’s since been hired to work at Longs Creek, where he once attended elementary school.

“He makes it more fun for us, for sure,” said Veyette Castro, Longs Creek cafeteria manager. “He’s very smart. He knows all of the rules. He keeps us on our toes!”

This partnership between NETS and School Nutrition Services is a win-win for everyone involved. When our students learn from the best in our cafeterias, they’re also building their resumes and expanding their options for employment.

For RJ, that meant finding a job he excels at serving our students #theNEISDway

If you think NETS may be a good fit for your child, you can learn more about NETS or email Special Education Director Lorena Gonzalez.
