• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • During our annual International Dot Day Celebration, students showed creativity by painting dot pictures with Q-tips. After reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds, they were inspired to create their own masterpiece.
  • Pre-K-1st grade students were invited to celebrate Scaredy Squirrel's birthday and make an acorn food craft. This annual tradition involves reading Scaredy Squirrel Has a Birthday Party by Melanie Watt.
  • 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade each had a battle of the books competition where students could read 10 books and then compete with their class team against other grade-level class teams. 2nd grade focused on fairy tales, while 3rd and 4th grade read award-winning books from lists created by the Reagan Cluster elementary librarians.
  • Author Bridget Heos visited Stone Oak to share with students how she finds funny ideas for books like Mustache Baby and Triceratopposite. The author helped students create a story and learn about the writing process in each session.

1st Grade Animal Inquiry Unit.

Teacher

  • 1st grade picked an animal to research on PebbleGo and used Chatterpix to make their animal tell facts about itself. Students found out what the animal looked like, where they lived, what they ate, what their life cycle looked like, and other interesting facts. Students then posted their creations to Seesaw for their parents to see.
  • 2nd grade researched a country of their choice using PebbleGo, CultureGrams, and books from the library. Students used the information from their research to create a video where they talked about the country and recommended that travelers visit there.
  • The librarian read the Texas 2x2 book, Poem in My Pocket to kick off National Poetry Month. The librarian used the book to discuss rhyming, structure, rhythm, tone, and feeling. The 3rd-5th graders worked in pairs to create a poem using Google slides. The Prek-2nd graders made an acrostic poem with their teacher’s last name as a group and then used the word SPRING/PRIMAVERA to create another poem.
  • Our Pre-K-2nd graders participated in makerspace activities this year, which included using the robots Dot and Dash, Ozobots, and Ollies. They coded these robots to perform specific commands and to move around the library.

5th Grade exploration of gravity, lasers, and mazes.

Lesson Spotlight

The librarian co-taught a lesson with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers where students could explore stations about gravity, lasers, and circuits. Students could also read about different makerspace activities by reading books from the library in one of the stations. This station exposed students to some of the books we have available in the library and supported their curiosity and the curriculum.

Collaborator

  • The librarian was in charge of the technology committee and helped solve technology issues that the grade levels were experiencing. She also collaborated with the ITS and admin team on a roll out plan for the one-to-one chromebook distribution for 2nd-5th grade and helped to organize, label, and distribute the chromebooks and helped the teachers set them up for their class.
  • The librarian collaborated with teachers for the annual Winter Wonderland Read Around the School event. Upper-grade classes were paired with a lower-grade book buddy class in the library to learn about the event, plan out which books they wanted to listen to, and map out the most efficient route.
  • The librarian collaborated with her PLC group monthly on Smart goal setting, action plans, and lesson ideas. She also attended monthly librarian training, where she learned new strategies to use in the library and about new library digital resources to share with the teachers.
  • Students made storybook character pumpkins to donate to the Laurels Retirement Community. The librarian was in charge of this event, and the family specialist was the liaison between the campus and the Laurels. The residents always enjoy seeing the fantastic creations every year right before Halloween.

Collaboration Spotlight

Kinder participated in a two-week-long unit focusing on Dr. Seuss for Read Across America Week. The librarian collaborated with the district reading specialist and the Kinder teachers to create stations for the students to rotate through. Each student was able to read multiple Dr. Seuss books, match rhyming words on green egg puzzle pieces, use positional words to place different Dr. Seuss characters in places, write a sentence about, and draw a picture of their favorite Dr. Seuss character. They then got to make their drawing of their favorite character come alive by using Chatterpix where their character reads their sentence, and take their picture with a Dr. Seuss happy birthday sign to hang outside of their classroom at the end of the unit. Each student strengthened their knowledge in rhyming, positional words, writing a sentence, and using technology to enhance their writing.

School Wide Winter Read Around the School Event.

Campus Leader

  • The librarian led the morning announcement crew throughout the year. She helped students broadcast the announcements using Zoom, a camera, and microphones. She also assisted the announcement crew in writing the script and preparing the slideshow. In addition, the librarian supervised the technology cart checkout team and the library helper team that picked up library books throughout the school.
  • Preschool-aged children were invited to the Stone Oak Library for three preschool storytimes. Each time they listened to a read-aloud, sang songs, danced, and made crafts related to the story or theme of the event.
  • With the help of our amazing volunteers, the library hosted two book fairs to promote reading and community involvement. Each book fair had an after school event where parents could come with their children to purchase books. The almost $9000 raised at the book fairs will be used to buy more books and supplies.
  • The librarian presented staff development on incorporating PebbleGo, PebbleGo Next, Capstone eBooks, CultureGrams, and News-O-Matic into their lessons for students. Teachers were also taught how to use their new Chromebooks in a meaningful way in their classrooms.
