  • The Woodstone Library hosted a bookmark contest during Read Across America Week. Students designed a bookmark advertising their favorite book.

Students researching bats.

Teacher

  • Second-grade students learned about the Five Finger Test. They use the Five Finger Test to choose books that will help them grow as readers and find appropriate reading materials.
  • 1st grade students used a form of note-taking called sketchnotes to research bats. Sketchnotes use words and pictures to engage both sides of the brain for greater recall.
  • After reading several books about Big and Little during pre-k storytimes, students received a sheet of stickers and had to sort them into big and little. The stickers were stuck into circles that said BIG and little.
  • Kinder students researched ladybugs with the assistance of the librarian. They used a nonfiction book about ladybugs and observed live ladybugs to write sentences about them.

Lesson Spotlight

5th grade students completed their study of Earth’s changes by working together on a digital breakout. Students were tasked with reading informational text from the library resources News-O-Matic and PebbleGo Next. They answered questions, thought critically, solved puzzles, and opened locks to save the school from falling into a sinkhole. Students enjoyed this activity and were successful. The digital breakout reinforced all the concepts they learned about how the Earth changes.

Collaborator

  • The librarian and ITS collaborated on a research project about animal adaptations for 3rd grade. Students researched four animals in a particular ecosystem and then created a We Survived eBook, which described how those animals use their adaptations to survive.
  • The librarian and 4th grade teachers collaborated on a research project about National Parks. Students researched a National Park and created a digital brochure detailing their findings.
  • The librarian and principal collaborated to create a Woodstone Rider Wall of Fame. The wall represents former Woodstone students who have succeeded in life, such as owning a business, military service, being a professional athlete, etc.
  • After a visit from meteorologist Sarah Spivy, the librarian and 2nd grade teachers collaborated on an inquiry lesson about the weather. Students came to the library and used PebbleGo to research a weather topic and then returned to class with their notes to publish their new information in Seesaw.

Collaboration Spotlight

During the 5th grade math unit on geometry, the Woodstone Librarian and 5th grade math teacher collaborated on a 3D printing project. After learning about different 3D shapes in math, students were tasked with designing a helpful tool that could be taken into space. The Woodstone Librarian introduced the students to the design program Tinkercad and walked them through the steps and tools for designing a 3D object. Once the students’ designs were finished, they were printed on a 3D printer for the students to keep. During the design process, students had to consider perspective, size ratio, placement of shapes, and the different forms they needed to fuse to create the actual object. Students were thrilled to receive the printed models even if the results didn’t turn out as expected.

Campus Leader

  • The Woodstone librarian offered professional development to teachers on the News-o-Matic resource in the fall and spring semester. Teachers learned how to search News-o-Matic by TEKS and how to change the reading level to meet the needs of their students.
  • The Woodstone librarian is a leader on campus. In addition to running a successful library program, she is a member of the leadership team and Campus Improvement Committee, Web Page Coordinator, GLC of the specials team, and Morning Announcement sponsor.
  • The Woodstone Librarian is a member of the Woodstone PTA Executive Board. She serves as the historian and the liaison between the staff and PTA.
  • The Woodstone librarian advocates for the library by posting on the Woodstone Elementary social media pages and in the principal’s newsletter. She also communicates with parents through Seesaw announcements.
