NEISD grad returns to Madison to make a difference

Class of 2020 graduate Robert Wright remembers walking past the flowerbed outside the library on a nearly daily basis when he attended Madison High School

“I walked through that courtyard all the time and thought it needed work. Now I have the ability to come back and do something about it.”

Wright now works for Saylee Greer Landscaping. It’s a career path that took root during his days at the Agriscience Magnet Program (AMP) at Madison. With his new experience and the generous team at Saylee Greer, he’s back and working with students to beautify the campus.

Over the course of a few days, Wright and current engineering students cleared out the overgrown flowerbed by the library and added mulch, gravel and plants donated by Saylee Greer to make it look as good as new.

“It’s neat to give back. The kids here are more thankful. It gives them pride in their school too.”

But this wasn’t just a labor of love. Wright took time to explain to the engineering students how engineers and architects are often called in to help with landscaping projects. He showed them how math is used to calculate how much mulch and gravel they needed to fill the bed. It took their classwork and turned it into a real-world, hands-on lesson they will not forget.
