NEISD Teacher Feature: MacArthur's Tokiko Powell

Tokiko Teacher Feature Banner

Tokiko Powell’s classroom at MacArthur High School is filled with paper fans, a beautifully ornate kimono, traditional Japanese masks and students eager to learn a new language. Whether working through flashcards or in groups, she makes learning a new language fun and interesting for her students.

“I love seeing the students learning and growing as a person. It’s just like a lightbulb they’re turning on in their heads, and that’s what I love about teaching.”

Powell was an elementary school teacher in Japan when her husband got military orders that brought them to Texas. Since then, she earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and taught countless students about the Japanese language and culture.

Many of her students have visited Japan after graduating from school and reach out to her about their experiences. She’s even gotten wedding invitations and pictures from students who are now in the military and stationed in Japan.

“Learning a foreign language can lead to an amazing adventure around the world. So, I’m thrilled to see the students study the Japanese language and where it leads them in the future,” said Powell. “I believe language is not just words. It’s a culture. It’s a tradition. It’s a community. It’s about inspiring students and sparking a love for learning.”

Tokiko Sensei, thank you for sharing your culture and language with our students and helping them find a passion for something new.
