“Kids are having a blast.”
All over the Serna Elementary School campus, something pretty cool is going on this week.
In one classroom, students are learning chess from MacArthur High School students.
In the gym, Brahma cheerleaders are playing games with students.
And in the auditorium, the MacArthur theatre teacher and students show the younger kids how to design costumes out of newspaper.
“We are designing superhero outfits,” said third-grader Julianna Mora. “I am really excited because I really want to be a designer when I grow up.”
All of this fun and learning gets students excited about coming to school.
It also gets them excited about high school and shows them their options later on in their educational journey.
After spending time with the “big kids,” the students head to the classroom to get support with reading, math and other subjects.
It’s part of the new extended school year calendar at Serna.
It offers four strategically placed intersession weeks giving students a break or additional help in classes.
Larkspur and Jackson-Keller elementary schools also switched to the extended school year calendar this year.
At Serna, nearly 50% of the students took advantage of the extra-learning opportunity.
“The support from MacArthur teachers and students really helped with the success of this first week of intersession,” said Serna Principal Jennifer Lomas.
