Librarian

  • Texas 2x2 Books Class Competition - All Pre-K through 2nd-grade classes were encouraged to participate and read the twenty books on the Texas 2x2 Book List. Classes that read all of the 2x2 books and completed their reading log earned a prize.
  • Roughriders Read! - Roosevelt football players read to first and second-grade students for November picture book month. The librarian coordinated the visit by contacting the head football coach and the Roosevelt High School Librarian. The football players participated in the Windcrest Friday Synergy Pep Rally and visited our Kinders classes for a read-aloud.
  • Steam Stations - The librarian offered various STEAM stations throughout the year. The stations were holiday themed, and after visiting the stations, students completed the Traffic Light Reflection activity. This activity encouraged students to think about what challenged them and what made them feel successful as they collaborated with their peers.
  • Holiday Reading Challenges - The librarian challenged students to read during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. Students were encouraged to read daily for 20min while at home. Students who completed their reading challenges were awarded a prize.

Lesson Spotlight

Exploring character traits with Jory John books and Pear Deck - The librarian created a Pear Deck lesson targeting character traits from the book, The Sour Grape. Students then created their own Jory John character and included attributes for their character using an interactive Pear Deck presentation.

Collaborator

  • Mommy and Me Storytime - Families were invited to bring their toddlers for a themed storytime, craft, and snack. The Mommy and Me Storytime occurred once a week for 6 weeks.
  • Fairy Tales Unit - The Kinder team and librarian read various fairy tales to the students. Students rotated through STEM stations in the library based on fairy tales.
  • Balloons Over Broadway - After listening to the story, Balloons Over Broadway, students read a News-O-Matic article about Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. They created balloon animals and held a parade in their classroom.
  • Spring into Reading! The family specialist and librarian distributed books for students to enjoy over the spring break. They informed families about the partnership with Scholastic during the Literacy Night and the March PTA Night. The library was decorated and the Windcrest mascot joined the fun. Students were excited to receive their book bundles from the library.

Collaboration Spotlight

One of my favorite collaborations of the school year was the 3rd-grade wax museum. The 3rd graders researched a famous person using NEISD Digital Resources. The teacher and librarian modeled how to take notes and cite sources. Upon completion, the students worked on preparing a speech for their living wax museum. This was a multi-step process that took place over several days. The students dressed as their chosen figures and had a great time presenting their work.

Campus Leader

  • Staff Library Orientation - The Windcrest staff learned where to access the NEISD DIgital Resources, including the library catalog. They were informed about the WIndcrest Library Programming events and were encouraged to participate in the Texas 2x2 Reading Challenge. They also learned about the 4 roles of the NEISD Librarian in order to gain a better understanding of how their librarian can help support them.
  • News-O-Matic - The librarian trained campus staff on the latest NEISD Digital resource, News-O-Matic. Staff learned how to access, use, and incorporate this resource in their lessons.
  • Author Visit with Glenn Green - The library hosted author Glen Green during the holidays. He read his debut book, Snow Day, and sang songs with students. He participated in the Windcrest Breakfast with Santa campus event and had multiple sessions with students and their families.
  • Novel Effect Staff Demo - The librarian demonstrated how to use Novel Effect with a read-aloud demo. Resources were shared on the Novel Effect website that included activities for Women's History Month and other themed activities.
