It was an unforgettable day at Camelot Elementary School.
Elementary students worked through unique TEKS-aligned lessons designed by Roosevelt High School students as part of the Manny Peña Academic Field Day. It’s a beloved tradition and collaboration between Camelot and Roosevelt that honors Manny’s memory.
Emmanuel “Manny” Peña once dreamed of being a teacher and volunteered often at Camelot. But his life was cut short in a tragic car accident just three months after he graduated in 2018.
The Academic Field Day in his honor is a pledge to keep his memory alive and inspire the next generation of learners. Camelot students rotate through academic stations “field day” style. Each challenge was created by students in Meredith Millegan’s GT English class with core Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in mind.
“We sent the lessons to Camelot for review first, got some feedback, and then they taught each other in class so they can get a feel for all of the lessons,” said Millegan. “I think they’re having a lot of fun today.”
Roosevelt PALS and Ready, Set, Teach students also joined the fun, along with students in the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) and Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA).
The tradition continues and Manny’s dream of being a teacher lives on in others #theNEISDway.
