Food Allergies in the Classroom
Food allergies can be a big concern for some of our students. Please understand that we take these conditions very seriously. Be sure to add pertinent allergy information to your student's health information form. If your student requires medication, especially emergency medication for their food allergies, please contact the clinic to make a plan to protect your student.
(Classrooms with students with peanut allergies will have a letter with the following information sent home to their parents.)
"Food allergies, especially peanut allergies can be deadly. An accidental casual contact with peanuts, or even inhaling small amounts of peanut particles, can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death for those who suffer from this condition. A peanut allergy for children is a very serious issue. People can have severe reactions just by inhaling the odor or fragrance of peanuts. They can cause reactions ranging from itching or swelling of the lips, tongue, or mouth to life-threatening shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure."
"How can you as a parent help? Avoidance, education, awareness, and preparedness are the four keys in the management of a peanut allergy. Avoidance means not eating or coming in contact with anything that has even tiny traces of peanuts. Although a child with a peanut allergy cannot always avoid all contact with this product, it becomes very difficult to manage when classmates bring snacks to school which contains peanut proteins. Let’s try to keep all our students safe and make a very concerted effort to not send any peanut products to school with your child."
