The next time you catch a flight at the San Antonio International Airport, make sure you look for two new murals designed by Roosevelt High School art teacher Sandra Gonzalez and her husband Malachy McKinney.
These particular designs were commissioned by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, which is part of the Get Creative San Antonio Public Art Program. Each design showcases San Antonio’s Tex-Mex culture, iconic landmarks, local attractions, native plants, and Mexican textiles.
A ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony was held at the airport on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The new pieces are titled, “Culture, Colors, and Traditions of San Antonio.” You can find them in the Terminal A Baggage Claim area.
“It felt great to celebrate the completion of these two murals,” said Gonzalez. “This project is very dear to my heart because these murals will welcome many visitors and will be used as a backdrop for many meaningful reunions.”
When she’s not teaching our students, you’ll likely find Gonzalez working on murals across Texas – from Laredo to Corpus Christi, Uvalde, San Antonio and beyond.
