Making an impact one jacket at a time

The Johnson High School SOS Club is leading the charge to give back to North East ISD students.

SOS stands for Students of Service. The club recently donated more than 400 articles of clothing to the North East ISD Council of PTAs Clothes Closet. More than half of the donations included jackets, hoodies and sweaters.

The SOS Club led a school-wide clothing drive to help stock our Clothes Closet. Junior Jaden Sotello, the club’s Make it Happen Officer, helped organize the effort and even got some of the surrounding feeder schools involved.

“I first wanted to be involved in this club and come up with new ideas for volunteer opportunities so we could incite change in our community,” said Jaden. “My responsibilities included emailing the feeder campus principals, delivering the bins and posters with [SOS club member] Ellie Rubio, checking on the collection bins during the drive and finally, picking up the donations and bringing them back to Johnson. We spent hours after school organizing them into categories, folding them and getting a final count on all the clothing.”

SOS Club members even helped pack and load all of the items so they could be brought back to the Clothes Closet. They’ll soon go to NEISD students. Families interested in shopping at the Clothes Closet just need to reach out to their campus counselor or Family Specialist to secure a voucher.

“Being involved in a club like this has made me a better person,” said Johnson senior and SOS Club President Natalie Ruiz.
