Dental Assistant students dress the part and land the job

Success comes with the territory at North East ISD’s Career and Technology Education Center (CTEC). Sonya Brown leads the Dental Assistant program at the NEISD Medical Professions Academy. Her year culminates with students taking the Registered Dental Assistant exam, bringing them one step closer to receiving their license and landing a job in the dental field.

The next step is landing a job. Interviews and resumes can be intimidating, but Brown is there to walk her students through the process.

“Job interviews, dressing for success and working on resumes is important to me because it will help students feel confident and comfortable during interviews,” said Brown. “We talk about job descriptions, researching dental offices, resumes, preparing their clothing in advance, practicing for the interviews, preparing questions for the interviewer, and go over how to be observant and listen closely to the interviewer.”

Brown works with every student until their resume, wardrobe and interview skills are ready for the next stage – interviewing with real employers. Preparation leads to success, and Brown is extra proud when her students secure a job before graduation.

“I get a little emotional because they are applying their knowledge of everything I taught my dental assistant students from August to now,” said Brown. “I feel like I have accomplished my mission to help my dental assistant students with their goal to work in the dental field.”
