Supplying confidence with a smile

Students near lockers

The concept is simple enough: teachers need supplies and students need life skills.

The Nimitz Exchange fills those needs.

Modeled after the Navy’s Navy Exchange (NEX) store, teachers put in orders for classroom supplies purchased by the Nimitz administration, and Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) students fill the orders and deliver them to the classrooms.

“It’s a win-win for sure,” said ALE teacher Eric Kurth. “The goal of ALE is to help these kids contribute as much as they can to their families and society.”

Kurth helps oversee the program. He wants his students to operate the Nimitz Exchange as independently as possible, and they are getting there. They are learning organization, how to fill orders and delivery systems. In the process, his students are honing their motor skills, working as a team, and getting real-world opportunities to work on their reading and math skills.

“The teachers have been the greatest,” said Kurth. “They really want this to succeed, and they want the kids to succeed.”
