Dellview Elementary School is celebrating the Month of the Military Child with a lineup of special guests.
All month long, military parents are stopping by DV-TV to share their experience serving our country with students over the morning announcements. Dellview parent Leonor Rojas described her role as a Store Keeper in the U.S. Navy this morning.
"My job was to supply command with whatever they needed – whether that's ordering a car part or paper clips and pens or eggs, chicken and beans for the cafeteria," said Rojas. "We were in charge of ordering all of that, along with doing the budget for command. We called it beans, bullets and band-aids. We ordered everything to make sure we were prepared when we deployed."
Rojas also gave a shout-out to her daughter Diana, a third grader at Dellview. She closed the special segment by taking a moment to talk about her hero.
"My hero is my husband. He's a policeman and he sees a lot of dangerous things every day."
Wednesday, April 20, is Purple Up! For Military Kids Day across North East ISD. It's a day for community members to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.
Rojas was honored to share her story with Dellview students and staff and hopes it serves as a reminder about the many sacrifices that military families, especially children, make every day.
"I think there's a lot of misconceptions about joining the military. It's a lot more than signing up to fight for your country. I had to grow up really fast, so I saw the military as a kind of escape. This was an opportunity for me to get away and better myself. I learned how to take care of myself and others because we're all part of the same team."
