    Announcements

Spring Break is next week from March 8-12.  It looks like the weather will be nice so hopefully you and your family can have some outdoor time.

Today is the last day of the 3rd nine weeks.  Teachers will finalize grades on the 15th and 16th. Check your child’s grades in the Parent Access portal.  We have one nine weeks to get all the final year grades up to an acceptable average.

KSAT was on the NEISD Webpage highlighting the parent of a current student who was in the first KSAT class in 1998.  Read the story  titled “ KSAT celebrates first second-generation student” at the link below.

KSAT Aerospace Teachers were highlighted for their efforts to continue providing opportunities for students to build rockets during these times of COVID.  See the story titled "KSAT teachers problem-solve just like students" at the link below.

The week we return from the break, we will have our KSAT Virtual Signing Night for current 5th grade/ incoming 6K students.  This event will be held on March 17th at 6:00 pm.  Those who have accepted seats will be notified with access information to this event.

This spring has been tough on everyone and I hope you and your family are able to get some rest so we can finish the year strong.

    February 12, 2021

Monday February 15 is a regular school day.  However, the following information is posted on the NEISD Website as of 4:00pm on Friday 2-12-21.

NEISD monitoring winter weather | 2.12.2021

The National Weather Service has indicated there is a chance of frozen precipitation on Monday morning, possibly extending into Tuesday. District officials will monitor weather reports and reports from the Texas Department of Transportation. The Superintendent will determine whether on-campus instruction will occur.

If the decision is made that travel to and from schools is not in the best interest for students and staff on those days, students will work asynchronously at home via teacher-provided lessons.

Your child’s school will provide you additional information.

Please contact your school if you have any questions.

On Sunday night and Monday morning, please monitor all media outlets including social media for the latest information on NEISD.

Magnet Applications were due February 12th. Offers and waitlist notification will be sent out on February 19th.  If anyone missed the deadline, they may apply, but they automatically are placed on the waitlist.

For more information about KSAT, please visit www.neisd.net/ksat .  On that page, you will find links to the application, the KSAT Brochure, and a link to the virtual hall used during our virtual open house.  In the "hall", you can explore the program and hear from some of the teachers about their grade level.

Reach out to my office at 210-356-4706 if you have further questions.

Be safe and warm this weekend.

Early Dismissal February 3 and 4

Middle schools have early dismissal Wednesday (February 3) and Thursday (February 4).  Because of our weird schedule this year, the instructional day looks like every other days except all students will leave campus at 1:50 pm after the last class.  There will only be one bus run which is at 1:50 pm. If you child rides the magnet shuttle, please make sure they are picked up as soon as they arrive at the home campus. There is no tutoring on campus after 1:50 pm.  The only students who should be on campus after 1:50 pm are the students in KIN and athletes staying for track practice.

    Magnet Applications due February 12th.

The NEISD Magnet applications are open now.  If you know someone who may be interested in applying for KSAT for the 2021-22 school year, let them know the deadline to apply is February 12th. If they apply after February 12, they automatically go to the waitlist and will be considered for admission later in the process. February 12th is also the deadline for 8th grade students who wish to apply to a high school magnet as well.

For more information about KSAT, please visit www.neisd.net/ksat .  On that page, you will find links to the application, the KSAT Brochure, and a link to the “virtual hall” used during our virtual open house.  In the "hall", you can explore the program and hear from some of the teachers about their grade level.

Since we are closed to visitors and we have had limited face to face recruiting events, I created a “KSAT Informational Video Spring 2021” found at the link below to provide a quick overview of the program.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXiluSe1j9o

Current 8th grade KSAT students get automatic admission into ETA, but you must let them know you are coming.  See the ETA website for more information.

Reach out to my office at 210-356-4706 if you have further questions.

    Have a great evening.

    Announcements

There are two early release days next week (February 3 and February 4).  Early release for middle school this year, is strange because all classes still end at 1:50 which is our early release time.  The difference on these two days is that all students must leave campus at 1:50 unless they have athletic practice or are in the KIN program.  There will only be one bus run which will be at 1:50.

Links for the evening will be posted on January 20 during the day.

Information on this event can be found on the attached flyer and the KSAT Website at www.neisd.net/ksat.

    Final Thoughts

Now that we are in the new semester, I ask that students start the year with a focus to complete assignments well and on time.  Help your child to not be discouraged when they do not understand but help them see this as a growth opportunity. Encourage your child continue to develop good study habits and develop the grit to succeed in addition to seeking help from their teachers. Work with your child’s teachers to create the support system they need to be successful.

    Director's Announcement

    January 3, 2021

I hope you all had a restful break.

School starts tomorrow (January 4, 2021) at regular time.  It is an early release day which means that all students will be released to go home at 1:50. There will be no tutoring or clubs between 1:50 and 3:30.  There is only one bus run at 1:50.  KIN will report immediately to the MPC at 1:50.  Basketball practice is scheduled to begin again.  The coaches should have communicated that information to the players.

Tomorrow will be an "A" Day, so plan to attend or Zoom your "A" day classes.  This is a change from my blog sent before the break.

    Announcements

The winter break begins on Monday December 21 and lasts until January 1.  Students return to campus or virtual on January 4 and it is a “A” day. (This is an update from my previous blog"). It is also  an early dismissal day.  For middle school, this means all students will need to leave campus at the 1:50 bell.  The only exception is for students in KIN who will report to KIN at 1:50.  There will be no after school activities. If basketball can resume practice on that day, the coaches will communicate that schedule to the parents.

    Final Thoughts

As I am writing this blog, I can feel the anticipation of the break which starts at the close of business today for all practical purposes.  This fall has seemed very long. As we plan for the spring semester, we hope the situation outside of school will improve and we can get more students back on campus.  We will continue to meet the needs of our students In-Person or Virtually until we are instructed to bring everyone back to campus.

I am looking forward to having some time with my family and getting some rest.  Two weeks seems like a long time until it begins.  When January 4th comes, the time will have been too short. However, I always enjoy getting back to school and interacting with the students. I look forward to the start of 2021.  With each new year, there is always hope for new beginnings.  As always, I hope to lose weight, exercise more and spend more time renewing my mind through books and podcasts.  One challenge 2020 has brought is spending quality time with people.  The COVID restrictions, separate us from each other physically, but also emotionally.  Therefore, my biggest goal is to develop stronger relationships with those around me. I may have to put on a jacket and sit in lawn chairs in my front yard to spend quality time with my neighbors and friends. This requires prioritizing my time so I can get together with those people.  I often let my life get busy doing “stuff” that I lose focus on the things most important to me which are people. At the end of the day, the relationships are more important than any accolade or material possession we accumulate.  During this break, I challenge you to identify and schedule time with those people who are the most important to you.

    Have a great break.

Only one week until the Winter Break and the end of the semester.  Everyone is getting excited, but we still have a week’s worth of work to complete.  Students and their parents need to push through until the 18th to get grades as high as possible.

    Recruiting opportunities (Repeat Announcement)

Our Final Virtual Magnet Night for KSAT will be held on December 15 at 6:00 pm. Please encourage anyone interested in the KSAT program to attend.

An on-campus KSAT OPEN HOUSE is scheduled for January 20, 2021 AT KREUGER - 438 Lanark San Antonio, TX 78218. This event is from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

This information is a repeat of the previous Virtual Open Houses.

Clarification about face coverings (Repeat Announcement):

In response to new information and the increased number of COVID cases, the district has modified mask guidelines.  Here is the guidance:

“Face coverings help reduce the spread of COVID-19 by reducing droplets if the face covering is worn securely over the nose and mouth. Final Thoughts

I have heard many lament how difficult 2020 has been and they are glad to see it come to an end.  I can not say that I would disagree.  However, as we do every new year, we look forward to the new opportunities and the prospect of the “new normal” that lies ahead. This frequently is not much different than the “old normal” we left in the previous year.  I remember hearing my grandparents’ generation talk about the “good ole days” – to which my immature mind would wonder "was that before or after indoor plumbing".

As we look forward, I hope that you and your families have planned a time of rest and reflection for the winter break. January 4th will come too quickly for many of us.  During this time of reflection, we should consider the good things we have learned about ourselves through the last few months of virtual and in-person instruction.  For those who are still remote, resolve to work hard to keep your grades up and consider when will be the right time you can return to campus to be with friends and teachers. If you decide that you would like to return on January 4th, please call my office to let us know so we can make plans for as many students who want and need to return.  Virtual learning will continue, but we miss seeing all our students on campus.

Finally, the magnet application system is open right now. The same system is used for all middle school and high school magnet programs. As previously mentioned, we have some recruiting events scheduled for January.  Check the KSAT website (www.neisd.net/ksat ) for those opportunities. For recruiting this season, it is more critical than ever to have parents and students share their experiences in the KSAT program. Please encourage interested families you know to apply.   More information about the magnet programs and the online application can be found at  https://www.neisd.net/magnetprograms or feel free to contact my office directly at 210-356-4706.

    COMMUNICATION

As I have stated in past blogs, communication is a key to ensuring success in these different times.  The news has reported a number of problems students and families are experiencing this year.  We have invited those students who are struggling with virtual learning to return to campus for In-person instruction. We have a credit protection plan for those who return to campus and are still struggling.  Check parent portal frequently.  If you have questions about grades, email the teachers and they will answer your questions as soon as they can. Also, contact the teachers if you are having technical issues.

In our technological world, we communicate frequently through email or phone.  Please access your parent portal account to verify phone numbers and email so you will receive all our communications.

Reminder about UNIFORMS: KMS is a uniformed campus. All students who are on campus are expected to be in uniform polo shirts or SPIRIT SHIRTS with khakis or jeans.

    Clarification about face coverings:

Over the Thanksgiving Break, modified face covering guidelines were issued by the district.  Here is the guidance:

Face coverings help reduce the spread of COVID-19 by reducing droplets if the face covering is worn securely over the nose and mouth. According to the CDC, cloth face coverings offer some protection to you and are also meant to protect those around you in case you are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and don’t have any symptoms. TRANSPORTATION

The Shuttle Bus schedule is posted (see the link below).  Students who have failing averages need to stay until 3:30 to attend tutoring so they can improve their grades.  Please make sure your child knows if they are leaving at 1:50 or 3:30 each day. If there is a change from their normal departure time, please email my office or the teachers to inform us of the change.  When a student is staying until 3:30, they need to confirm with a KSAT teacher where the tutoring group will meet each day since the location rotates each day.

Reminder: if your child rides the bus at 1:50, please make sure there is someone at the home campuses to pick the students at the scheduled time.

Magnet Shuttle Schedule- The schedule was revised for a couple of buses- 282, 123, 293. If your child rides one of those buses, they should have received a letter from transportation- If not, here is the link to see the schedule.

    Final Thoughts

The fall semester is quickly coming to an end.   For some students, the best place for them to learn may be back on campus.  Call my office if you would like your child to return.  We have some returning on Monday December 7.  We can add any student who needs to return.

We have some recruiting events scheduled before the February 12 application deadline.  Check the website (www.neisd.net/ksat ) for those opportunities. During recruiting this season, it is more critical than ever to have parents and students share their experiences in the KSAT program. Please encourage interested families that you know to apply.   More information about the magnet programs and the online application can be found at  https://www.neisd.net/magnetprograms.  They can always contact us directly at 210-356-4706.

    Announcements

November 23-27 (this week) is the Thanksgiving Break from school.  School begins again on November 30.  Hopefully, this week will provide some much-needed rest from the crazy fall semester.

    Recruiting opportunities

We had our first KSAT Magnet Video Night recently. Facebook Live shut down unexpectedly and we were not able to complete the presentation.  To provide parents with additional information, we have two additional Magnet Video Nights for KSAT on November 30 and December 15 at 6:00 pm.

An on-campus KSAT OPEN HOUSE is scheduled for January 20, 2021 AT KRUEGER - 438 Lanark San Antonio, TX 78218. This event is from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Note for 8th grade students. It is time to start deciding your high school choice. Current KSAT 8th grade students will receive automatic admission into the Engineering Technology Academy (ETA) at Roosevelt High School.  In the next few weeks, ETA will send a link to 8th KSAT asking students and parents if they will accept this admission offer.  Please look for this information after the Thanksgiving break.

    COMMUNICATION

As I have stated in past blogs, communication is a key to ensuring success in these different times.  The news has reported the number of problems students and families are experiencing this year.  We have invited those students who are struggling with virtual learning to return to campus for In-person instruction. We are working on a credit protection plan for those who return to campus and are still struggling.  When we return from the Thanksgiving Break, we will only have fifteen days before the end of the first semester. Check parent portal frequently.  If you have questions about grades, email the teachers and they will answer your questions as soon as they can. Also, contact the teachers if you are having technical issues.

In our technological world, we communicate frequently through email or phone.  Please access your parent portal account to verify phone numbers and email address so you will receive all our communications.

Reminder about UNIFORMS: KMS is a uniformed campus. All students who are on campus are expected to be in uniform polo shirts (6th grade- golden rod or yellow, 7th grade- white and 8th grade- black) or SPIRIT SHIRTS with khakis or jeans.

    TRANSPORTATION

The Shuttle Bus schedule is posted (see the link below).  The morning schedule is like last year’s schedule.  The afternoon has two departure times. Students who are not participating in extracurricular activities or tutoring, may choose to depart at the earlier time. Students who have failing averages need stay until 3:30 to attending tutoring so they can improve their grades.    Please make sure your child knows if they are leaving at 1:50 or 3:30 each day. If there is a change from normal departure time, please email my office or the teachers to inform us of the change.  If a student is staying until 3:30, they need to confirm with a KSAT teacher where the group will meet each day since the location where students go after 1:50, rotates each day.  Over the last few weeks, we have had situations where the student rode the bus at 1:50 and there was no one at their home campus to pick them up. Therefore, if your child rides the bus at 1:50, please make sure there is someone at the home campuses to pick the students at the scheduled time.

    Final Thoughts

Thanksgiving is this week.  Take some time to reflect on the good things happening in your life. As you celebrate, please be mindful of safety protocols put out by our governmental officials to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  We want everyone to return after the break ready to finish the semester strong.   The next two months will be very busy.  We have some recruiting events scheduled.  For recruiting this season, it is going to be more critical than ever to have parents and students sharing their experiences in the KSAT program and encouraging interested families to apply.   More information about the magnet programs and the online application can be found at  https://www.neisd.net/magnetprograms.  They can always contact us directly at 210-356-4706.

    Have a great week.
