      Mrs. Ashley Scott

I am a native of San Antonio and am especially proud to be a product of the NEISD family. I attended Hidden Forest Elementary, Eisenhower and Bush Middle School, and graduated from Reagan High School in 2003. After high school, I went to Texas A&M University (WHOOP!), where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (May 2007). I must love learning as much as my students do because I also have two master's degrees: Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University (May 2009) and Administrative Leadership from UTSA (December 2012).

I began my educational career as a 2nd grade teacher. After teaching for 6 years, I accepted the position of assistant principal at Camelot Elementary (2013-2022). I had the pleasure of serving the Thousand Oaks community for a semester before becoming principal at Coker in January 2023. As Principal of Coker , I am committed to embracing the positive traditions and practices that are already in place at Coker while working diligently to ensure success for the future. I believe all children should receive an exemplary education in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. Together, we can help our children excel and provide them with an education that is second to none.

On a personal note, I married my wonderful husband in July 2014. Together, we have 2 precious boys: Cooper and Connor!

Bachelor’s of Arts in Bilingual Education
Master of Education with a Major in Educational Administration

      Ms. Maria Astorga

As the Assistant Principal, I consider myself truly fortunate to continue serving the wonderful students, families, faculty, and staff at Coker Elementary School. My mission is to provide the best leadership and learning opportunities for our little Cubs to develop critical-thinking and the necessary problem-solving skills to achieve excellence in education. Together, we will also continue to create and strengthen social-emotional systems of support and build strong bonds to help us all thrive and meet our goals.

Prior to my arrival at NEISD, I worked as a bilingual teacher, curriculum and instruction coordinator, and school administrator in SAISD and Northside ISD. I also worked in SAISD Central Office as an instructional specialist with other professionals to develop a district-wide dual language program that positively transformed learning for thousands of students. Being a life-long learner provided me with other enriching opportunities, such as being a consultant for the Texas Education Agency collaborating with specialists across the state to revise the English Language Proficiency Standards and the STAAR tests, ensuring and providing equitable learning opportunities for all student populations in Texas. These experiences inform and propel my decisions and actions in addition to my own educational experiences, including a B.A. in Criminal Justice and Bilingual Education from UTSA, in addition to an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, and most recently a research fellowship as I continue my studies towards completion of a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership.

Although I love the distinct roles and responsibilities I have conducted in education, it is equally important to have a good balance in life. For me, this comes in the form of spending quality time with my family and friends. On short breaks, we love to watch science fiction movies, attend extraordinary events in public libraries and museums to read and learn about intriguing places, immerse ourselves in cultural events, or visit surrounding communities in search of fascinating antiques and forgotten treasures. Whenever a long break comes along, you will find me on an adventure traveling to fun and exciting destinations around the world. Have you ever slept in a pyramid, walked inside a glacier, or trekked across a tree bridge in a rainforest? How about having breakfast where President Lincoln lived as a child, eating lunch in a medieval castle, or making dinner in an indigenous hut on a Mesa that is 1.5 miles above sea level using tools and recipes that are over five hundred years old? I have lived through these adventures thanks to a well-rounded education, which I am happy to share with you on your next visit to Coker Elementary!

      What is your story?
