Driver Education
As young adults approach driving age, the quality of their driver's education program becomes critical. Courses taught by qualified professionals are vital. They place a well-balanced emphasis on driver performance, making accurate decisions based on perception and appropriate behavior at a time when students are just beginning to drive.

- Come to Class: Your first 3 days (6 full hours) are critical to your program. On the 4th day, you will receive a DE-964E certificate. If you miss a day, you will legally not receive a certificate. This certificate will allow you to take your permit test at DPS & receive your permit!
- Go to DPS: Don't lose that certificate! You need to bring that certificate, along with these documents, to any DPS in Texas. Appointments are open up 6 months in advance. At your appointment, you will take your permit test (30 questions), a vision test, and voila - get your permit!
- Time 2 Drive: After you receive your permit, register for a Schedule2Drive account at schedule2drive.com Use this online scheduling tool to reserve your drives, enter in your parent hours, and receive feedback from your instructors.
- Attendance Counts: TDLR requires a full, 32 hours commitment to be eligible for a driver's license. Any tardies or absences are not excused and will need to be made up at another session. Double check your schedule to make sure you have no interference!
- Set Goals: Don't miss your deadline! Register for at least 3 drives/month and log at least 5 hours/month in your parent log. Each driving session is 40 minutes/1 hour long. We anticipate you to have at least 12 drives in total.
- Practice Makes Progress: You will be required to log in Fridays at 4:30PM to register for available drives (times are subjected to change - keep updated on the S2D dashboard). It is mandatory to drive for 7 hours with an instructor, 7 hours of observation, and 30 hours with an adult. After completion, you will receive your final certificate to get your provisional!

How do I sign up?
What different programs do you offer?
- Live, in-person at one of the NEISD high school campuses or the NEISD Community Learning Center
- Self-paced, online
- No matter which way you choose to complete your classroom instruction, you will receive behind-the-wheel instruction with our comprehensive program.
How much does this program cost?
How does this program differ from a private/commercial driving school?
Can students take class anywhere, or are they limited to their home high school?
Do you teach students how to drive?
Does NEISD provide cars for in-car/behind-the-wheel instruction?
Am I notified if my student misses a class?
-
No, we do not notify parents or guardians if a student does not attend class.
I wouldn’t be able to get to class until 30 minutes after it begins every day. Am I still able to attend?
- Unfortunately, State regulations require that students be present for 55 minutes of every instructional hour. Arriving late to class is not something we can allow.
- We have classes that start later, and self-paced, online classes for those who have schedules that conflict with our in-person classes.
How does a student pass the class?
-
Students must receive a 70% or higher average grade on all coursework, including tests, quizzes, daily work, and the final exam.
What supplies are needed for this class?
-
We ask that students come to class with something to write on and something to write with.
What happens if I miss a class?
- Students are allowed to miss up to 10 hours of classroom instruction before they are removed from class. There are 16 days or 32 instructional hours in this course.
- To make up a class, the student will need to attend the day they missed (Day 1-16) with another class. The makeup information, instructions, and calendar may be found by clicking this link which takes you to our driver education website.
How long do I have to complete this program?
- Students taking a class from August 2021 and after have nine (9) months to complete the entire program from the first day of class.
My student does not attend NEISD. Can they still enroll in this program?
-
They absolutely may! Any active high school student may enroll in this program.
Can a student 18 or older enroll in this program?
-
While this program is geared towards 15-17-year-olds, any active high school student 15 or older may enroll. Driver education requirements change when a person turns 18, but they can still complete the teen program as long as they are in high school. At their DPS appointment, they will specify that they are requesting an Adult License with Permit Restrictions.
How do I get my permit?
- Permits must be obtained through a Texas DPS location. This can be any location in the state of Texas. Most locations do require an appointment, though some are open to walk-ins.
- After completing the first 6 hours of classroom instruction, whether it be online or in-person, students will receive a DE-964. This form verifies that a student is actively enrolled in a concurrent course and has completed the required hours to obtain a permit. This form, along with all required documents, should be taken to DPS to apply for a permit.
- To review all required documents, please visit the DPS website by clicking here.
- Please note that students who take a live class (online or in-person) must pass a multiple-choice examination at the DPS in order to receive their permit.
What do I bring with me to my DPS appointment?
-
For information on the documentation needed at a DPS appointment, please review the page linked at the end of this FAQ on the DPS website on applying for a teen driver license in Texas. As requirements may change, we want to make sure you always have the most up-to-date information - Link to the DPS website.
What is a VOE? How do I get one?
How do I make an appointment to drive?
- Driving appointments may only be made after a permit/learner license is obtained from DPS. For instructions on obtaining a permit, please see the “How do I get my permit?” FAQ on this page.
- After you have obtained your permit, please follow the instructions included in your course enrollment contract, or linked here, that walk you through how to create a Schedule 2 Drive account.
- Please make sure when enrolling that you enter your Texas Driver License/Learner License number, and not your student ID or any other number.
- Once your account has been approved, you can begin scheduling available drives!
What time do you post new drives?
- Beginning July 1st, new drives are posted every Friday at 4:30PM
- As students withdraw from drives throughout the week, new drives will become available. These cancelations are unregulated and can happen at any time.
Do I have to drive with my student to complete this program?
- While the State does not require that parents drive with their students specifically, they do require a Practice Log. The Practice Log must be completed before a student finishes their last drive. These 30 hours are completed outside of the time with our licensed instructors and completed with a licensed adult supervising. The log requires at least 10 hours of nighttime drives and is recorded in Schedule 2 Drive.
- We remind students throughout the program to work on their Practice Log to ensure that it is complete by the time they are ready to finish the course.
Do you drive with students in the rain?
- We do! One of the best times for a student to learn to drive in the rain is with a licensed instructor.
- Please note that in the case of severe thunderstorms, flash flood warnings, snow, and other extreme weather conditions, we do reserve the right to cancel drives in the interest of safety.
Where do the drives take place?
How does the Practice Log work?
- The State of Texas requires that students complete a 30-hour practice log. This log must be completed before a student completes their final drive. Students must practice driving with a licensed adult 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience.
- Students may record all driving time, but only 60 minutes per day count towards the 30-hour requirement.
- Driving hours with NEISD instructors do not count toward this requirement and should not be recorded on this log.
- 10 of the 30 hours must be completed at night, which is from sunset to sunrise.
