North East Independent School District

18 Services - North East Transition Services

Director: Lorena Adkins

What are 18+ Transition Services?

Individualized and specially designed instruction for young adults ages
18–21, based on the goals and needs outlined in each student’s IEP.

The setting for this instruction may be the campus, community, or a combination.
18+ Transition Services are designed to support students and their families in
preparing for adulthood by addressing individualized goals related to employment,
education or training, and independent living skills.

Aligned to each student’s IEP, our 18+ program supports:
  • Guided participation in group and individual community leisure activities.
  • Personalized learning activities based on student strengths and needs.
  • Work-based learning opportunities to build employability skills.
  • Instruction in functional daily living skills and financial literacy.
  • Support in developing independence across home and community settings.

18+ programming is specifically designed to meet additional instructional needs identified through the ARD process, facilitating the transition to postsecondary, age-appropriate instructional environments, including community settings or environments that prepare the student for postsecondary education or training, competitive integrated employment, or independent living, in coordination with the student's transition goals and objectives.

All 18+ instruction is based upon the student's transition assessments, postsecondary goals, and instructional needs. The setting for this instruction may be the campus, community, or a combination. The duration of enrollment in 18+ programs is determined by the individual needs of each student and their progress in acquiring the targeted skills, and it is not required to align with a commensurate school day.

Age-Appropriate Instructional Environments

In accordance with the best practices established by the Texas Education Agency for the 18+ Adult Transition Program, we are committed to delivering specially designed instruction that supports robust instruction, transition, and skill practice, in an age-appropriate setting.

Campus Based Services

Instruction takes place primarily on the campus using classrooms, simulated environments and scheduled community outings.

Student schedules are individualized and developed based on each student’s identified needs and transition goals.

Transportation to and from the student’s home may be provided by the district, in accordance with eligibility and transportation guidelines.

Students participate in scheduled and structured travel training opportunities designed to explore and learn how to safely access and use public transportation.

Community Based Services

Instruction takes place primarily in the community using job sites, grocery stores, public spaces, and local businesses.

Schedules may change on a daily or weekly basis to support individualized instruction and experiences.

Students receive regular, and in some cases daily, exposure to public transportation through the use of VIA bus, VIA Link, and VIA Trans to build independence and real- world travel skills.

Transition-Focused Education

18+ Services effectively address additional instructional needs in a more comprehensive manner, while aligning appropriate services for adult students and their families through collaboration and the strategic use of staff and resources, thereby supporting the transition to suitable postsecondary environments. The effectiveness of transition-focused education is significantly improved when service systems and programs collaborate to facilitate the implementation and application of this learning.
