Earn College Credit While Still in High School

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program, developed by the College Board, allows high school students to take college-level courses and exams while still enrolled in high school.

Students who earn qualifying scores on AP exams may receive college credit, advanced course placement, or both at many colleges and universities across the United States.

NEISD offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses that challenge students academically and help prepare them for college-level expectations.

Benefits of Taking AP Courses

Students who take Advanced Placement courses often gain valuable academic experience before entering college.

Research from the College Board shows that students who participate in AP courses are:

  • Better prepared for college-level coursework
  • More likely to pursue rigorous college majors
  • More likely to complete more college coursework within four years
  • More likely to develop strong time management and study skills
  • More prepared in critical thinking, analytical reading, and academic writing
  • More likely to pursue advanced degrees such as medicine, law, or doctoral study

AP courses provide students with an opportunity to challenge themselves academically while building skills that support long-term success.

AP Exams and College Credit

At the end of an AP course, students have the option to take the AP exam, which is administered nationally each spring.

Depending on the exam score and the policies of the college or university a student attends, the exam may provide:

  • College course credit
  • Advanced placement into higher-level classes
  • Both credit and placement

While there is a fee for each AP exam, the cost is typically much lower than the cost of a college course, making AP an affordable way to begin earning college credit.
