North East Independent School District

Secondary GT Services

Throughout the school year, NEISD provides a flexible system of viable service options designed to meet the educational needs of students performing well above peers of the same age, experience, and environment. To qualify for services, students must demonstrate an academic need on nationally normed achievement and ability tests.

Starting in sixth grade, students who demonstrate an educational need for GT services can participate in one or more of our secondary programs, which include:
  • GT Math
  • GT English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR)
  • North East School of the Arts (NESA)

From grades 6–12, students identified for GT services are primarily served through gifted content courses, and GT students may participate in one or more of the Secondary offerings: GT Math, GT English, GT Interdisciplinary Studies, and/or North East School for the Arts (NESA). In high school, GT students can choose to participate in Advanced Academics* options:
  • Advanced Placement (AP) courses
  • Dual Credit courses
  • On-Ramps Dual Enrollment courses

GT Math and GT English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR) follow the NEISD curriculum and align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). GT teachers enhance instruction by differentiating depth, complexity, and pacing to meet the unique needs of gifted learners.

*Advanced Academics options are open to all students who meet the prerequisites. Please see the campus course catalog for more information.

NESA is a gifted and talented program in the arts located on the high school campus, Legacy of Educational Excellence. NESA offers a rigorous academic environment, consisting of a sequential, customized curriculum designed to encourage artistic excellence, integration with multiple arts disciplines, and authentic assessment. NESA students study daily with the unique staff of professional educators who are also working artists with significant training and experience in their individual disciplines. NESA students participate in master classes and seminars with professional artists, engage in many enrichment activities, and have multiple opportunities to showcase their talents.
  • Majors: Cinema, Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre, and Visual Arts.
  • Admission: Students are accepted through an application and formal audition process; students in grades 8-11 from Bexar County and surrounding areas may apply.
