Parent Message: Sept. 16, 2022

Earlier this week, our Board of Trustees voted to make Election Day – Tuesday, November 8 – a student and teacher holiday. 

This means the last day of school for campuses that follow our traditional calendar has been moved back one day from Thursday, May 25, 2023, to Friday, May 26, 2023. 

Remember, if your child attends an extended school year campus or year-round campus, your makeup day will be determined at a later date. That includes the Academy of Creative Education (ACE) and Serna, Larkspur, Jackson-Keller and Castle Hills Elementary Schools. 

The Texas Election Code requires that public buildings, including schools, be made available for use as a polling place. As a District, we cannot prohibit the use of a school as a voting location. Please know the safety and security of your children and our teachers and staff remain the highest priority. The decision to make Election Day a student and teacher holiday was made with the safety of our entire community in mind. 

You may have also seen the news this week that our new Senior Director of Safety and Security will join us next month. Paul Duran has spent the last 29 years as a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. He once protected former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and now he will protect our students and staff. This addition is yet another resource to further strengthen our security and prevention measures, conduct safety audits and provide training to staff.

Please continue to share your concerns with us and report any suspicious activity, threatening remarks or social media posts to our anonymous tipline (neisd.net/tipline) or the NEPD non-emergency line (210-407-0925). 

Don’t forget, The Big Give starts Thursday, September 22. You’ll have 24 hours to donate to our schools through this community-wide fundraiser. A principios de esta semana, nuestra Junta de Fideicomisarios votó para hacer del Día de las Elecciones, el martes 8 de noviembre, un día festivo para estudiantes y maestros. 

Esto significa que el último día de clases para los campus que siguen nuestro calendario tradicional se ha trasladado un día del jueves 25 de mayo de 2023 al viernes 26 de mayo de 2023. 

Si su hijo asiste a una escuela de año escolar extendido o durante todo el año, se le comunicará su día de recuperación en una fecha posterior. Eso incluye la Academia de Educación Creativa (ACE) y las Escuelas Primarias Serna, Larkspur, Jackson-Keller y Castle Hills. 

El Código Electoral de Texas requiere que los edificios públicos, incluidas las escuelas, estén disponibles para su uso como lugar de votación. Como Distrito, no podemos prohibir el uso de una escuela como lugar de votación. Por favor, sepan que la seguridad de sus hijos y de nuestros maestros y personal sigue siendo la más alta prioridad.
