Empowering lifelong learners in the District that inspired her.

“I wanted to teach specifically in North East because I attended North East ISD schools.”

Thousand Oaks Elementary Dyslexia Therapist Ashley Quistian has spent most of her life with North East ISD.

She attended Serna Elementary School and Ed White Middle School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2008. But graduation couldn’t keep her away since she was attending local colleges; she worked as a Kids Involvement Network (KIN) assistant and eventually a KIN director while going to school.

While attending Texas A&M San Antonio on her way to becoming a teacher, she did her student teaching at Woodstone Elementary School.

Her first teaching job was at Wilshire Elementary School.

“I love North East. It’s my home. There were so many teachers I had that made me feel safe and took care of me at school. So, I wanted to be a teacher so I could give that back to kids.”

Quistian is giving back in a big way. She’s not just a teacher; she’s a Dyslexia Therapist. She works with students from kindergarten through fifth grade, helping them find the tools they need to learn to read and overcome the barriers dyslexia puts in the way of their educational journeys.

“I work to empower kids. This position gives me the opportunity to work closely with parents. Plus, my daughter has dyslexia, so I am even closer with our parents because I can understand where they are coming from as a parent.”

Quistian says despite being a teacher, she had no idea her daughter was struggling with dyslexia until she took on this role and learned more about it. So, she encourages parents to ask questions.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. NEISD is proud to have Dyslexia therapists and services available to our students at any of our campuses.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to your campus counselor or view additional information about special education services at NEISD.
