Senior Spotlight: Roosevelt's Jiselle Torrez

Roosevelt High School senior Jiselle Torrez is your typical teenager.

She likes spending time with friends, making TikTok videos and playing basketball.

“She is our social butterfly,” said Roosevelt’s Special Education Campus Coordinator Elizabeth Waugh. “She loves to socialize. She is independent. She is a wonderful student. Now that she is a senior, we have seen so much growth from her.”

Jiselle is an Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) student who has excelled in the programs offered at Roosevelt. One of her favorites is the Job Site program, where she learns skills to help her get a job.

“I really want to work at Ross,” said Jiselle.

But the learning won’t stop for Jiselle after graduation; she’s going into the North East Transition Services (NETS) program. It’s a community-based program specifically designed to support 18-year-old students transitioning to life after school. It offers graduates courses on budgeting, cooking, employment skills, and navigating public transportation.

“We want all of our students, especially those in our alternative learning environment, to become independent and active members of our community,” said Waugh. “And Jiselle is a shining example of how incredible and independent our students can be.”

Congratulations to Jiselle and the rest of the 2022 senior class.
