Have you ever seen a tea bag fly?
STEM Academy sixth graders at Nimitz Middle School helped KSAT Meteorologist Sarah Spivey conduct an experiment live on the air this morning. Spivey and anchor/reporter David Sears walked Cheryl Hernandez’s science class through the process live on KSAT before students gave it a try.
First, Spivey and the sixth graders talked about a possible hypothesis. Next, they took a tea bag, opened it with scissors and emptied the contents into a pie tin. Next, they converted the tea bag into a cone and placed it over the tea inside the tin. Then, they lit it on fire and watched wide-eyed as the tea bag burned and rose high in the air to become floating ash.
By the end, the students were well-versed in the physics of convection thanks to this hands-on experiment.
