Students from the STEM Academy at Nimitz Middle School donated enough money and canned goods to provide more than 8,000 meals to families in need.
They recently presented a check for more than $1,150 to the San Antonio Food Bank.
That will provide 8,100 meals for families.
“This is an amazing effort by the students and faculty here,” said San Antonio Food Bank’s Heather Stanton. “Y’all are helping feed our neighbors not only on a regular level but an emergency level as well. I get goosebumps thinking about it. These donations will go far to help families in need.”
They also collected more than 1,200 cans of food for the SA Food Bank.
8th grader Nicolas Carrillo brought in nearly 400 cans of food.
“I did this because people are in need of food, and not everyone has the ability to go to stores and buy food, so I try my best to give food for them to eat.”
This wasn’t just a lesson in helping their community. The students also got a bit of an engineering lesson out of it. Before donating all the canned goods, more than a dozen teams competed to see who could build a 55 can pyramid the fastest.
