Inspiring safe habits behind the wheel
Homecoming is an exciting week on high school campuses. The Johnson High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Smart Driving Club is reminding students not to get distracted during the campus’ annual Safe Driving Event.
Students experienced the dangers of driving distracted firsthand through this immersive experience. Our teens wore goggles that mimicked the effects of alcohol while navigating obstacle courses. The experience really drove home the message.
"If we are able to encourage even one of them to put down their phone while they're driving, this event was worth it," said Deanna Mazzocco, Johnson PTSA President. "It's not just about being a mindful driver, we are also encouraging them to be good passengers too."
Several law enforcement agencies were also there to chat with students about safe driving habits and how taking your eyes off the road – even for one second – can be a life-changing decision.
The PTSA Smart Driving Club at Johnson has been educating students about the dangers of driving distracted on campus, across North East ISD and around the San Antonio area for more than 10 years.
It’s up to us to break the culture of distracted driving. The sooner we embrace that message, the safer we will all be on the roadways.
