If you want to see a lesson that gets students and teachers excited, look no further than Epic Myth Day at Tex Hill Middle School. Students transformed the library at Hill into a Gods and Goddesses Unity Summit (GUS). It took months of planning and collaboration to pull it off, but it was EPIC.
Creative Writing students from North East School of the Arts (NESA) worked in groups and spent weeks creating stations, designing costumes, writing scripts and making art to fully convert the Hill library into Mount Olympus, hunting grounds, Medusa’s statue garden and the Underworld. Thirteen stations gave sixth through eighth-grade GT English students hands-on, memorable mini-projects taught by high school students to help them grasp ancient literature concepts.
The younger students were in awe as they traveled from station to station. Many said they wanted to spend more time in each lesson. The NESA students really got into character to bring activities and characters to life. There was no end to the smiles and excitement.
It was an idea that truly showed how NEISD students and staff work together to help cultivate a lifelong love of learning. It took teams from NESA, our Arts Integration Ambassadors, Library Services, and Curriculum & Instruction to create this fully immersive experience for the students. And it’s a lesson these students won’t soon forget.
