Cultures and cuisines collide at MacArthur

Students cook tres leches cake and cookies

You don’t have to speak the same language to agree on what tastes good. MacArthur High School culinary students and culinary students visiting from the Czech Republic can all agree on tortillas, cookies and Tres Leches cake.

They worked together to make all three dishes during a special international culinary showcase. Despite the language barrier, they followed each recipe and discovered a lot of common ground throughout the process.

Students listen to a culinary teacherJeweliette Carrillo is a junior in the MacArthur Culinary Program. She has always loved to cook and was excited to join the program as a freshman. She’s now leading the way in the kitchen and the classroom and was excited to take part in the showcase.

“I love to cook, and I love to share what I know, so this has been a lot of fun,” said Jeweliette. “There’s a little language barrier, but we can all agree on the ingredients and the process.”

The Culinary Arts Pathway introduces students to occupations and educational opportunities related to the planning, directing, or coordinating activities of a food and beverage organization or department. This pathway also explores opportunities involved in directing and participating in the preparation and cooking of food.

It’s one of our many Career and Technology Education (CTE) electives. Check out our Magnets School Programs to learn more.
