Community Update for December 4

Dear ISA Families,

There are only two weeks remaining in the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year! Our students have been working hard completing coursework and collaborating with their teachers to demonstrate their mastery of content as the first semester comes to a close.

On Monday, December 5, at 7:00 a.m. through Wednesday, December 7, at 4:30 p.m., students will be able to access the Exam Exemption Application through Skyward: Student Access. Students are invited to review THIS handout and/or THIS* video to assist in accessing the exemption application process.

*The video linked above also contains instructions about how to appeal!!

NEISD Exam Exemption Policy contains important differences from previous years. This year, student’s attendance will be considered in the eligibility criteria. Key pieces of the policy of which to be aware:

  • Attendance data prior to August 22, 2022, will not be included in the eligibility criteria for First Semester Exam Exemptions,

  • Absences due to COVID-19, will not count against a student to determine eligibility, and

  • Absences due to illness--documented as “X”--that might eliminate a student from consideration may be appealed, and ISA encourages families to continue to keep students home if they are not feeling well.

The Fall Semester Exam Schedule will begin on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Please contact Steve Magadance at smagad@neisd.net or Delia Gauna at dgauna@neisd.net with questions.

The Final NEISD High School Magnet Night will take place at Garner Middle School on Monday, December 5! ISA’s Ambassador Team will be in the cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Send your friends who are interested in ISA to visit and learn more about what it means to be a Globie! The Lottery Application for the ISA Class of 2027 is available HERE! We are also happy to share that we have added one more on-campus shadowing experience for interested 8th graders on Friday, January 20, 2023. Space is limited and interested families can register for the experience HERE!

The ISA Amigos Board will meet on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. in the ISA Flex Space (S-103). Join us to discuss upcoming support for MUNSA and other agenda items. Please park in the visitor parking lot in front of the LEE HS Main Building. All are welcome!

Looking ahead, on Monday, December 12, ISA seniors will have a final on-campus opportunity to take a senior portrait in the PERC. This opportunity will also serve as this year’s yearbook photo. Students who have not yet taken a portrait will have an appointment scheduled for them during the English IV class with Mrs. Gorski. In person, portrait appointments are still available at the Prestige Studio, and the deadline for portraits to be included in the yearbook is in January 2023.

MUNSA XXVII: Empower is one month away! This Friday, December 9, our MUNSA staff and all of our sophomore delegates will participate in a pull-out session to practice parliamentary procedure and hone the skills they will need to ensure their readiness for MUNSA at Trinity University on January 5 and 6, 2023. Good luck this week MUNSA staff and delegates!

We want to take a moment to thank our two new counselors at ISA. Romelle Carraway and Jennifer Brooks have spent the first semester getting to know ISA students, teachers, and families. Both counselors have traveled with our students and immersed themselves in all things ISA. As they begin to plan for how they will serve our students during the second semester, they have developed a new request form that students will be able to submit when they need an appointment. This request form will allow our counselors to prioritize high need requests, and craft a schedule of support that will allow them to provide guidance services for all ISA students. We plan to implement this new request form at the beginning of the second semester, and we are excited to see how this new process works!

Finally, the Fall Semester Exam Schedule will begin on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Students will have finals in the following sequence:

  • Tuesday, December 13 - Periods 4 and 6

  • Wednesday, December 14 - Period 2 and 5*

  • Thursday, December 15 - Periods 1 and 7+

  • Friday, December 16 - Periods 3 and 8+

*On Wednesday, December 14, ALL ISA students with 5th period lunch will participate in an extended 4th period Study Hall Session with ISA Teachers from 12:35 p.m. to 1:10 p.m. Students will be released to lunch at 1:10 p.m. on this day!*

+On Thursday and Friday, we will follow an early release schedule. School will end at 1:20 p.m. on each of these days and buses will be on campus at that time. Students who ride buses home should report to the bus loop immediately after school.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Steve Magadance and the ISA Faculty
