Community Update for November 13

Dear ISA Families,

By the time this update arrives in your inbox, six charter buses will be several hours into carrying students to ISA’s fall travel experiences! ISA sophomores will be on their way to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and ISA juniors will be headed to Birmingham, Alabama, by way of New Orleans and a college visit at Tulane University! We have one more departure scheduled for this week. On Tuesday, ISA ninth graders will depart for Houston, Texas, and check-in information is below:

Tuesday, November 15

  • Freshman Check-In: Please arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. at the PERC! The Freshman team reminds families that check-in could take between ½ to 1 hour.

ISA’s Travel Experiences have been a part of our community’s culture for nearly two decades, and these experiences help ISA students and faculty live out the pillars of the ISA Graduate Profile. Through travel, our students have opportunities to Investigate the World, Identify and weigh multiple perspectives, Develop and communicate their ideas, and--through our community developed travel curricula--Take action to address global problems. We believe that this kind of experience makes ISA truly unique in the education community and we are excited to continue this work with our students!

While we travel, recruiting season continues in NEISD. On Monday, November 14, a team of ISA Ambassadors will visit Bradley Middle School. Visit us in the cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. or send your friends who are interested in ISA to visit and learn more about what it means to be a Globie! The Lottery Application for the ISA Class of 2027 is available HERE, and our next on-campus Shadowing Day is scheduled for December 2, 2022!

On Wednesday, November 16, NEISD will host our annual College & Career Expo in Expo Hall 2 at the Freeman Coliseum (3201 E. Houston St., 78219) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We expect more than 100 colleges and universities and 30 area businesses to attend this event making it a great opportunity for students to explore post-secondary school opportunities!

On Thursday, November 17, a team of ISA PALS will attend Jackson Middle School’s College & Career Night! The event begins with a keynote address at 6:00 p.m. and the exposition portion of the evening begins at 6:25 p.m. Visit the PALS or send your friends who are interested in ISA to visit and learn more about being a Globie from the perspective of one of ISA’s most important service and mentorship organizations!

NEISD is beginning the process of renewing our District’s designation as a District of Innovation that occurs every five years. NEISD is hosting two virtual meetings this week to share more information and receive feedback:

  • Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. - Join HERE

HERE is an update on upcoming initiatives and events for the LEE Campus PTSA!

Looking ahead, when we return from the Thanksgiving Holiday, MUNSA XXVII: Empower will be nearly one month away. As this year’s secretariat continues to prepare for this year’s in-person return to MUNSA at Trinity University, we want to share how proud we are of this year’s secretariat and our MUNSA sponsor’s, Catherine Polk and Yvette Peña, who have guided the secretariat in planning this year’ experience. We are excited for what is in store in early January!

Upon return on Monday, November 28, the end of the first semester will be three weeks away. As we begin to plan for the end of the semester, students and families will soon receive information about how to request semester exam exemptions.

NEISD Exam Exemption Policy contains important differences from previous years. This year, student’s attendance will be considered in the eligibility criteria. Key pieces of the policy of which to be aware:

  • Attendance data prior to August 22, 2022, will not be included in the eligibility criteria for First Semester Exam Exemptions,

  • Absences due to COVID-19, will not count against a student to determine eligibility, and

  • Absences due to illness--documented as “X”--that might eliminate a student from consideration may be appealed, and ISA encourages families to continue to keep students home if they are not feeling well.

On Monday, December 12, ISA seniors will have the opportunity to take senior portraits on-campus in the PERC. This opportunity will also serve as this year’s yearbook photo. The deadline for ISA seniors to take their senior portrait is December 17. Portrait appointments are still available at the Prestige Studio, and the deadline for portraits to be included in the yearbook is in January 2023.

Finally, this Friday, November 18, 2022, marks the end of the 6th week of the second grading quarter. Progress reports will be posted in Skyward: Family Access by the end of the week of November 28. ISA will be closed from Monday, November 21 through November 25, during the Thanksgiving Break. Also, this update will take a brief hiatus during Thanksgiving. The next update will arrive on Sunday, November 27, 2022!

Have a great week and a safe, restful break!
