Community Update for October 23
Dear ISA Families,
On Saturday evening, the LEE/ISA/NESA/STEM Community celebrated Homecoming together at Littleton Gymnasium. The familiar sounds and sights of students sharing time together reminds us why being together is so important! Homecoming also celebrates the diversity of our campus community.
If you happened to walk the hallways at ISA last week, there was a good chance you would see ISA 9th graders working in small groups rehearsing for a performance. On Friday, October 28, ISA 9th graders will travel to local elementary schools for their Storytelling Project. In collaborative teams, 9th graders have prepared scripts, costumes, and props for stories from across the world. They will debut their stories to 1st graders this Friday. This cooperative experience provides our 9th graders with an opportunity to practice the collaborative skills they will need for future work with classmates at ISA and beyond high school. Good luck to 9th graders this week!
ISA Recruiting season is in full swing and we will host our third on-campus Shadowing Experience this Thursday, October 27. One of the best parts about Shadowing is the way ISA students step-up to share their experiences with prospective families. Our 9th graders take on the role of guide as they help eighth graders from class to class, answer their questions, and explain what they are seeing while on-campus. ISA 10th, 11th, and 12th graders also share their perspectives about the ISA experience with parents and guardians, answer their questions, and tour our learning spaces. Watching the pride our students have in sharing about their school helps remind us how important and special the ISA Community is for each student.
Also on Thursday this week, grade level teams will host their next travel information meetings, and MUNSA will host our annual Pancake Supper in the LEE HS cafeteria! This event will also be the next opportunity to purchase ISA Spirit items. Pancakes will be served beginning at 5:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. If you would like to purchase tickets for a pancake meal to enjoy before or after the grade level travel meetings, please have your student purchase tickets from any MUNSA Chairs or tickets can be purchased in ISA S-102. Tickets are $5 each, and can be purchased with cash or checks.
Grade-level teams will meet in the following locations and times on Thursday:
9th grade - LEE Auditorium - Adjacent to the ISA Main Building at 5:30 p.m.
1oth grade - ISA Flex Space - S-103 at 6:00 p.m.
11th grade - Library MPR at 6:00 p.m.
12th grade - Mrs. Gorski’s Room - 103 in the ISA Main Building at 6:00 p.m.
Additionally, a representative from the Council on Educational Exchange (CIEE) will also be on campus during the evening to answer questions and provide information about the Global Navigator international exchange program. This year, CIEE has earmarked $25,000 in need-based and academic support for ISA applicants, and this is a great way for ISA students to explore their world during a summer exchange program.
Our campus nurse, Crystal Rios, is still accepting travel medication for our upcoming travel experiences! Nurse Rios has prepared some reminders and procedures to help families ensure that their students get what they need while traveling in November.
All medications, along with the proper forms, should be turned in to the campus clinic on or before Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
Special requests requiring doctor’s orders should be on file with the nurse by Monday, October 31, 2022!
NEISD employee chaperones will administer medication. Students may NOT carry ANY medication on their person unless they have a current doctor's order to self-carry from the school nurse for this school year.
If you are not sure about the above details or have any questions, please, contact Nurse Rios at (210) 356-0803 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
More detailed information about procedures--including items we CANNOT accept is outlined on THIS medical information form.
Looking ahead, the LEE High School Band is hosting their annual BBQ Fundraiser on November 12! Secure your BBQ plate by purchasing a ticket from any band or color guard member by October 31, 2022! Tickets are $10. Click the link to this Flier for more information.
There is still time for students to pay for AP Exams by credit card through Skyward: Student Access--not Family Access. HERE are instructions about how to submit payment. The deadline for credit card payments is November 11, 2022. Cash payments for AP Exams are also acceptable. Students can submit cash payments in the LEE Counseling Office through November 11, 2022!
As we move into the travel season and the end of the first semester approaches, we would like to share information about the NEISD Exam Exemption Policy for 2022-2023. An important difference to this year’s practice from the previous two years will be a return to the inclusion of a student’s attendance in the eligibility criteria. Key pieces of the policy of which to be aware:
Attendance data prior to August 22, 2022, will not be included in the eligibility criteria for First Semester Exam Exemptions,
Absences due to COVID-19, will not count against a student to determine eligibility, and
Absences due to illness--documented as “X”--that might eliminate a student from consideration may be appealed, and ISA would like to encourage families to continue to keep students home if they are not feeling well.
We know this policy is a change from previous years, and the exam exemption opportunity may be new for our 9th grade families. If you have questions about the Exam Exemption policy, please contact us at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Finally, this Tuesday, October 25, is our district’s next early release day! School will dismiss at 2:00 p.m..
Have a wonderful week!
Steve Magadance and the ISA Faculty
