How does Garner honor veterans?

Veterans Day Ceremonies

November 11, 2019

Veterans Day ceremonies at Garner begin with our NJHS students lining the sidewalk along Harry Wurzbach Road in front of our campus before school carrying the US Flag, in a patriotic spirit and also to thank all the veterans driving along this stretch of road as they head to work at Fort Sam Houston.

During our Veterans Day ceremonies held for each grade level and their families, our choir and full orchestra perform a medley of songs to honor all veterans.  The JROTC from Roosevelt HS has posted our colors for many years at each of these ceremonies. Student co-masters of ceremonies (Ashley Castillo and Elijah Del Toro) introduced our guest speaker.

Our guest speaker this year was a former Garner student and MacArthur HS graduate, Michael Salazar.  Michael attended Garner for 1 and ½ years from the spring of 2005 to 2006. He was inducted in our NJHS as an 8th grader and was also a student-athlete.  He became an AVID student at Mac and was also inducted in the NHS.  He graduated from Mac in 2010, received his bachelor's degree from UT Austin four years later and was commissioned an officer in the US Air Force.  He currently is stationed at Lackland AFB as a flight commander.

Michael has a younger sister, Kylie, who is an 8th grader at Garner. I was an assistant principal when Michael was at Garner, and am honored to be Kylie’s principal today.
