Mapping the Future

North East ISD students have a lot of choices to make during course selections. They have to juggle core classes, electives, magnet school programs and pathways while considering what college, career or trade they would like to pursue after high school.

It can sometimes feel overwhelming, but counselors like Alyson Moyer make it fun. There’s a lot that Moyer enjoys about her job as a Professional School Counselor, but career conversations with students at Bush Middle School is one of her favorites.

“I love talking to them about course selection and what they’re interested in,” said Moyer. Middle school is really the time when a lot of college and career planning begins. There’s so many magnet programs, pathways and electives they can take advantage of so there’s a lot to cover.”

Some students know exactly what they want to pursue, but for the students who are unsure, Moyer is there to assure them there’s as much value in knowing what you don’t want to do. From there they eliminate and narrow down where their interests lie.

It’s rewarding for Moyer to watch our students grow from hesitant teens to confident young adults. That doesn’t happen without dedicated counselors who work hard to prioritize our children’s social, emotional and academic needs.

Feb. 3-7 is National School Counseling Week. Please join us in celebrating all our counselors do for our students and families.

If you want to let an NEISD counselor know how much they mean to you, we’ve made it easy to send them a Staff Shout Out!
