Calculus Expectations & Grading Policies

Expectations

  • You can expect me to be on time and prepared for class.  I expect the same from you.
  • We will RESPECT ourselves and others.
  • We will be POSITIVE and POLITE about ourselves and others.
  • We will use our class time to LEARN as much about mathematics and its applications to our world as possible.
  • We will be focused and complete the work that is assigned in order to be prepared for the AP test.
  • We will ADHERE to NEISD and Johnson HS rules and procedures.

Daily Materials:

Students should bring to class every day their calculus assignments, pencils, notebook paper, a spiral in which to keep daily notes and either a folder or a binder to store all papers.  A graphing calculator is not required but is very strongly recommended. (We recommend TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire.)

Class Policies:

It is extremely important that you understand our District and Campus policy for excused and unexcused absences and how each of these can affect your grade in this class.

  • You are allowed one class day to make up work for each class day you are absent.
  • School business (field trip, athletic activity, etc.) does NOT count as an absence.  Therefore, you are required to let your teacher know you will be absent and get the work ahead of time.  In other words, you are expected to be prepared for your next class period.  This is important because if you come back to an assessment, you will be expected to take the assessment.
  • An “excused” absence allows you to make up all work and receive credit for that work as long as you accomplish this within the time restraints set forth in NEISD and Campus policy.  You will be expected to make up assessments on your time so as not to lose further class time.  This can be done before or after school or during a study period during the school day.
  • Make-up work due to an absence is your responsibility.   You should obtain from your peers any notes that were missed.  If you missed an assessment, you will schedule a time to come in to make it up.  Time allowed for make-up is in accordance with the Student/Parent Handbook.  There will be no exceptions to this policy.
  • Make-up work for unexcused absences will be penalized equal to late work.
  • Late work/make-up work will not be accepted after the test for that unit has been given.

Tutoring

Help is always available.  You may come in for tutoring during my regular tutoring schedule.

Grading Policy

Your grades will be weighted as follows:

  • Daily Grades—5% of the nine weeks grade
    • These grades include homework, group work, classwork, and homework checks.
    • Not all homework problems will be graded.  Work must be shown with calculations and/or diagrams that logically lead to a solution.  While I encourage you to form study groups, the work performed must be your own and not copied from someone else.   Keep in mind the late work/make-up work policy – late work must be turned in before the test for that unit.
  • Formula Quizzes and Edmodo Quizzes – 5% of the nine weeks grade.
  • Class Quiz Grades—30% of the nine weeks grade.
    • Quiz grades may include short project grades and regular quiz grades.
  • Test Grades—60% of the nine weeks grade
    • Test grades can be unit tests, nine-week tests, take-home tests, or major projects.
    • Late take-home tests will receive reduced credit!
    • You do have the option to come in to correct your test regardless the grade you made for a fourth of your points back.  You all will have an opportunity to retest on test grades that are below a 70. You must come in for tutoring and do test corrections before you retest.  You have one week after the grade has been returned to do the retest.
  • Semester Exams will count as 20% of the semester average.

AP Calculus is a challenging course.   I will work hard to help you learn the material and I expect you to work hard to learn it.
