ENGLISH IV 1413

Mr. Markmann  Room E10

The study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers.

Goals

Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes.
Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution.
Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose.
Read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts.

Grading

Summative (Major assignments) – 50%
Formative (Daily work, etc) – 50%

Materials

1 inch binder
Spiral notebook
Loose-leaf college-ruled paper
Paper, pens, etc.
Google classroom access

Late Work

Late work will be accepted with a 20% reduction for three weeks or until the material is assessed.

Tutorials

8:00 – 8:30 a.m. M, Tues, and Thurs

4:15- 5:00 p.m. M, Tues, and Thurs

Absences

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to update your writer’s notebook and obtain your assignments. Be proactive about your absences and your education. No one else will do it for you.  

Unexcused absences will result in a zero.

Tardies

Be on time. School policy will be followed.

Plagiarism & Cheating

Work that is found to be insincere (copied from another student, lifted from the Internet, etc.) will receive a zero. All violations of this rule will result in an academic honesty referral, a conference with your parents, and loss of trust in you.

Food & Drink

NO food allowed. Bottled water is ok.

Restroom Usage

Ask at the appropriate time before using the restroom, and ALWAYS sign out/sign in.

IDs & Dress Code

Please follow school dress code. You’re almost adults – don’t act like you don’t know how to dress and act appropriately.

Electronics

Multiple studies have shown that while you think you are an adept multitasker, you end up not doing any of the tasks particularly well.  Please keep your electronics put away/off desk and show some respect while I teach and while you work.

Conduct Grades: A student’s conduct grade can be demoted based on school-written policy violation. Which can include tardies, classroom conduct, attitude, academic dishonesty, etc. If the conduct is severe enough, the teacher reserves the right to demote straight to a “u.”

Reteach and Retest Policy – as per district policy. If 50% or more students fail an assessment, the teacher will re-assess using a different mode during classroom time. If less than 50% of students fail, a student can individually advocate for a retest during tutoring time. (DISTRICT POLICY)

Final Word

You will only get out of this class what you put in. If you choose to try to skate by, you will only skate by. If you actually try, read, and complete your assignments you might actually do well and enjoy it. Looking online for the answers will not teach you anything.
