Strong Bonds at Montgomery

Destiny Bonds with NEISDway sign

When Destiny Bonds attended Montgomery Elementary School as a student, she never thought she would return to teach there someday.

But five years ago, she walked back into Montgomery to make a difference in the community she grew up in.

“I felt like I needed to come back to where I was from to make a difference,” said Bonds. “I grew up in this area. I know this neighborhood. So, I get it. These kids really do cling to you when they respect you, and it’s just a nice feeling.”

That shared experience helps Bonds relate to her students.

It helps Bonds teach her students.

It helps Bonds grow her students.

Her ties to the community also help her connect with her students’ parents.

“The parents here recognize me because we went to school together or they were a few grades older or younger. I am teaching kids of kids I used to go to school with. That’s a little wild, but that relationship is key to helping these students succeed. I am very proud of Montgomery. We are pretty amazing. We do amazing things here, and I am proud to be a part of it.”
