NEISD Campus Safety Specialist Spotlight: Encino Park's Daniel Tawney
Daniel Tawney is the “Sticker guy” at Encino Park Elementary School.
While that title is important to him, his role at the school is much bigger than stickers.
Tawney is one of North East ISD’s Campus Safety Specialists (CSS). Our Safety Specialist position fulfills the House Bill 3 requirement that an armed security officer is present at each campus. They are stationed at our elementary schools and are solely focused on security. They monitor school grounds, ensure doors are locked, security cameras are working, and fencing and parking lots are secure. They also lead safety drills and training.
“The first thing I do in the morning when I get here, when it’s dark out, is walk the perimeter fence line before the children are here, before anybody arrives and just make sure that everything is locked up and secure.”
Before serving the families at Encino Park, Tawney served our country in the Air Force. He says the tools the military gave him are a huge asset to helping him serve our community now. That said, he’s been impressed with the training regimen our District has provided him and the rest of the CSS team.
They undergo continuous training throughout the year to ensure they are ready for any security threat. They are a vital part of our multi-level security and safety processes, helping to keep our students and staff safe.
“These are my 607 kids and we need to get them home safely, and we need to take care of these teacher and take care of the admin staff. This is all about children and people. It’s about who’s in the building, making sure everybody gets home safely.”
Tawney added that if you want to make a difference in our schools and community, there is a place for you. Whether that’s working as a CSS, a teacher, a custodian, a nutrition services employee or a bus driver.
Before becoming a CSS, Tawney made sure our students made it safely to and from school as a bus driver and transportation dispatcher for our District.
