Peer Assistance Learning and Leadership or PALS is a North East ISD program allowing students to mentor and help other students. Recently, the Johnson High School PALS decided to make this year’s Special Olympics Hoop It Up game something extra special.
“Our Hoop It Up game is typically a basketball game that our Special Olympics basketball team plays against the faculty,” said Special Olympics Coach and Adapted PE teacher Kristen Allen. “But there were groups of PALS who came to all of our basketball practices this season. The energy of the PALS helping and making friendships with our Special Olympians would be something I would leave on an emotional high after every practice.”
Because of that special connection, the PALS stepped in for the faculty for the annual game.
They took ownership of the event, setting up committees on who would do the flyers, shirts, halftime routine and decorations.
“You name it, between the PALS and their sponsors Leah Plumas and Mandy LaCour, they helped with all the planning and did an amazing job,” said Allen. “This was the best Hoop It Up event that we ever experienced. After the game, you would have thought our Special Olympians had won a state championship.”
After the game, the students in attendance stormed the court and celebrated with the athletes.
