Reagan students put woodworking skills to the test

students leaning on cabinets Each year the students in Reagan High School’s Mill and Cabinetmaking class build cabinets for a real client. In Mill and Cabinetmaking, the class offers students an opportunity to not only learn high-end cabinetry skills, but also how to work as a team with a deadline and a budget.

In years previous, cabinet builds have been made for the homes of students and other clients, but this year, Reagan is doing something a little different. This year the cabinets are not for a client’s home, but instead for Reagan’s very own JROTC program. Students are building four large rolling cabinets to be used by the JROTC program to transport uniforms to and from competition. The cabinets are being constructed of a high quality ¾-birch plywood and accented with walnut face frames and Rattler R’s as door handles.

The cabinets have also been made with the latest and greatest door hinge technology that have soft close features incorporated within them. For ease of transport, the cabinets have 6” industrial wheels that allow the cabinets to be moved around without any issue. The cabinets were made to meet Reagan’s standards and expectations of what consumers expected from industry.  Students worked for two periods each day, five days a week, in order to meet their deadline.
