Class is in session at Castle Hills
Castle Hills Elementary School opened its doors to students and parents for the 70th time Monday, July 19. Families gathered by the marquee to take pictures, parents walked their kids to class and teachers welcomed this year’s learners to their homerooms.
Denise Rios has three children in North East ISD, including a fourth-grader and second-grader at Castle Hills. She considers the untraditional schedule an advantage for the whole family.
“We love the year-round schedule,” said Rios. “We like how they don’t get a huge summer off, so it helps them to retain everything they’ve learned, especially at this age. It feels like there’s less relearning once school starts.”
Castle Hills is the District’s only year-round campus. School starts in July and ends in May, allowing for two-week breaks, or intersessions, in October and March in addition to regularly scheduled calendar breaks.
Rios enrolled her children at Castle Hills through NEISD’s School Choice option. That decision continues to pay off for the whole family.
“Here, it feels like family,” said Rios. “The kids are very comfortable with all of the teachers. They come home talking nonstop about school. If the kids can have an attitude where they are excited to go back to school, that’s a big deal.”
Castle Hills first opened its doors in 1951 and was designated as the District’s first year-round elementary campus in 1991. It’s been a beloved part of the Castle Hills community for the last 70 years.
Students who attend Castle Hills must live within six feeder school areas, live in the Castle Hills attendance zone, or apply for School Choice.
