Camp Code zeroes in on STEM career skills

North East ISD middle school students have been sharpening their STEM skills at Bradley Middle School all week with hands-on activities. This free, week-long camp focuses on innovative concepts, computational thinking and career investigation. Opportunities like this bring the District’s emphasis on computer literacy skills and career readiness full circle.

“Each day, we highlight careers that are growing in Texas, what soft skills are required, and show the students what CTE courses can help get them to their goal,” said Cori McGhee, Career Readiness Program Coordinator. “Our goal is to ensure that beginners understand foundational concepts and that we inspire students to develop and grow their passion for STEM.”

Camp Code is funded through a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. Instructors Dan Dolce of Bradley, Kole Lovett of the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) and Caleb Meyers of Tex Hill Middle School introduced the basics of web design, circuits, robotics and programming. NEISD instructors also incorporated a Career and Technical Education (CTE) job focus each day, explaining how the skills the students covered translated to the real world.

On Thursday, June 10, guest instructor Josh Beck went over the basics of cybersecurity and networking. He also talked about the exciting opportunities ahead at the Institute of CyberSecurity & Innovation (iCSI). Beck will be the lead instructor at the District’s new cybersecurity program that opens this August with its inaugural freshman class at a state-of-the-art facility. At iCSI, students will have the opportunity to graduate with at least four industry-based certifications.
