Students at Krueger School of Applied Technologies (KSAT) are working to solve food insecurity in San Antonio and beyond.

This problem was really highlighted earlier this year during the COVID-19 Pandemic and the deadly winter storm. More than 120,000 families sought help with food.

“I had no idea it was such a huge problem until this year,” said eighth-grader Lauren Dehart. “Young people have really good ideas, and we don’t always say them, so I think it’s really good that they are coming to us.”

On Monday, May 24, eight KSAT teams pitched their ideas to city leaders and other community groups. The teams offered up ideas like creating community gardens, subscription box services and food donation drives. On May 25, the students will get an opportunity to speak with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg about their presentations and ideas.

“The coolest part was creating the presentation and finding new and creative ideas for the judges,” said eighth-grader Cedric Hernandez. “We aren’t learning from textbooks; we are getting out in the real world and trying to do something about it.”

Along with potentially solving a critical problem in San Antonio, the teams could win one of several prizes, including a drone.
