MacArthur junior up for prestigious Rise scholarship

MacArthur High School junior Katherine Lockman is in the running for a renowned scholarship. Lockman is one of 500 finalists selected for the Rise scholarship program, a new global youth initiative from Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust.

This year, Rise received thousands of submissions from more than 165 countries. Applicants were asked to create videos about their passions. They were also challenged to complete a seven-week project during the Rise Challenge: identify a big idea, propose a solution, and propose how to implement it in their communities.

Lockman is part of MacTEACH's PTSD Ambassador program. She works hard to advance their mission of advocating for mental health issues related to veterans and youth. Katherine is now eligible to receive $1,000 to be used toward her education or social impact. As a finalist, she will now participate in a series of virtual activities and interviews to be considered one of 100 Global Winners who will receive a lifetime of support, such as scholarships, mentorship, seed funding, and more.

"I want to lodge a global effort, bridging the gap between veteran and youth suicide because one is not any greater than the other," said Lockman. "For too long, this topic has been shunned from general conversations and even ignored. The first step toward resolving any issue is to acknowledge its existence. Because each of us has a mind, we are all susceptible to mental health conflicts. We are all in this together."
