If you can dream it, you can create it at DATA at Ed White
There’s no limit to the possibilities in Moshue Hicks’ Exploring Multimedia class. It’s a world where technology, art and design collide through industry-standard software programs. In his sprawling computer lab, sixth-grade students discover their passions and prepare for a career so specific and advanced it hasn’t even been dreamed up yet.
“The jobs they’ll be applying for haven’t been created yet,” said Hicks. “They need to be able to take a new piece of software, start experimenting, watch some YouTube videos and embrace their own interpretation of how that software’s supposed to work. You need students who are flexible.”
Flexible students thrive at the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) at Ed White Middle School. Hicks is one of the many instructors who instill good habits and a solid foundation in fields like architecture, design, computer science and coding.
A 3-D printer is almost always humming in Hicks’ classroom. Miniature models of student creations line the classroom as a constant reminder that if you can dream it, you can create it.
“Getting them excited about the technology and letting them get creative is really fun,” said Hicks. “Instead of grabbing a rocket ship or an alien off of the web, they’re able to create their own graphics. If you like computers, design, art and drawing, then this is the place for you.”
DATA offers its middle school students a head-start to industry-based certifications they can earn in high school and beyond. In a world with increasingly competitive job markets, it’s never too early to get ahead. Technology seems to evolve faster and faster every day. As daunting as it can seem, it plays right into Hicks’ strengths as an educator.
“I don’t teach the same curriculum two years in a row,” said Hicks. “There’s always changes in the software, updates, new programs and online versions of things. So really, my students teach me stuff as often as I teach them. Once they get started with the tools, I’m always blown away by what they come up with.”
The next generation of innovators is getting their start right here at North East ISD. Are you ready to jumpstart your future at DATA? CLICK HERE to learn more about the application process. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 12.
