Genius Hour brings career options to Krueger students

It’s never too early to start thinking about your dream job. At Krueger Middle School, there’s a club for students who are interested in weighing their options and learning more about the career opportunities ahead of them. And there’s no shortage of new experiences during Genius Hour.

“Genius Hour is open to any Krueger student,” said Meggan Partain, Instructional Science Coach and Genius Hour Sponsor. “The goal is for students to participate in experiences that they may not normally get to have.”

Students in Krueger’s Genius Club meet for one hour every Wednesday and often Zoom with incredible organizations around the country. In the coming weeks, students will have opportunities to visit virtually with a freshwater ecologist at Virginia Tech University, researchers from the Mt. Washington Observatory in New Hampshire and a dolphin research center in Florida.

Last week, the group learned about combustion and liquid nitrogen through the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

“We know that with many of our students still at home, they are getting fewer hands-on opportunities and it is more difficult for us to do things on campus while keeping kids safe. We hope that this is a chance for kids to have fun and spark curiosity with science even when conditions are less than ideal.”

Despite the distance, Krueger is committed to finding new ways to help their students prepare for a bright future.
