MacArthur CyberPatriot team is one of the best in Texas

MacArthur High School CyberPatriot Team Captain, Jack Sledge, is a senior this year. He thought he wanted to be a musician and play in a band, but joining the CyberPatriot team has altered his course. Next year he plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and major in computer science.

Sledge and his teammates have something else to be proud of. The MacArthur CyberPatriot team is one of the best in Texas. They recently placed second in the state, beating out hundreds of other teams. Later this month, they have a chance to advance further with the ultimate goal of competing in the finals in Maryland in March.

But Sledge will be the first to tell you; these wins didn’t come easy with all the extra obstacles 2020 threw at them.

“2020 posed challenges in terms of accessibility to resources needed to practice, and the fact that you learn better by being there in person, but we were able to overcome this,” said Sledge. “We were motivated to teach each other new material and work together to prepare for competitions through online practices.”

Volunteer mentor and MacArthur Alumni, Peter Myers, couldn’t be prouder of what this team has accomplished.

“The students have learned how to host meetings using Zoom and have developed fast ways to collaborate and share documents, scripts, and even virtual machines,” said Myers.

We want to wish the CyberPatriot team the best of luck at the upcoming competition.
